Marmite-owner announces 7,500 positions at risk in cost-saving bid

A global food conglomerate has disclosed plans to reduce around 7,500 positions across its operations, as part of cost-saving initiatives.

Unilever, renowned for producing Marmite in Burton upon Trent since 1902, is looking to achieve savings of around £684m over the next three years.

With household brands such as Ben and Jerry’s, Cornetto and Magnum, Unilever will also split its ice cream business and introduce a fresh productivity strategy.

With a global workforce of 128,000 employees, including 6,000 in the UK, Unilever has not specified the locations or types of jobs affected by these changes. However, roles are anticipated to be eliminated over the next two years.

Led by new CEO Hein Schumacher, who assumed the role last summer, the firm’s portfolio also includes beauty and cleaning brands like Dove, Domestos and Cif, along with Hellmann’s.

Ian Meakins, chair of Unilever said: “The Board is determined to transform Unilever into a higher-growth, higher-margin business that will deliver consistently for all stakeholders. Improving our performance and sharpening our portfolio is key to delivering the improved results we believe Unilever can achieve.

“The separation of ice cream and the delivery of the productivity programme will help create a simpler, more focused, and higher performing Unilever. It will also create a world-leading ice cream business, with strong growth prospects and an exciting future as a standalone business.”
