Plans for huge residential scheme on former John Player site get nod from planning bosses

How the scheme would look

Plans for a huge student accommodation complex on a historic industrial site in Nottingham could see almost 600 bed spaces being brought forward in the city after planning bosses gave their back to it.

Hyson Green Developments wants to build the scheme on Norton Street in the Radford area of Nottingham.

The plans outline a seven-storey scheme on the historic original site of the John Player & Sons factory. It will include 587 student bedrooms within 116 apartments and include a “green heart”.

The plans will go before Nottingham City Council’s planning committee next Wednesday (June 19) where they will be voted on.

The accommodation blocks would be run by The Student Lodge – the company behind the Radford House, Adam and Burton House and Provident Works schemes in the same area of the city.

The site is currently a redundant car park. A planning statement reads: “The proposed redevelopment of the Norton Street site represents a significant regeneration opportunity and financial investment into Nottingham, which will form a key component in the ongoing development of the area.

“The outlined design and associated reports/proposals culminate in a high-quality, viable addition to the city, providing in a refined and considered development that would sit comfortably within its surroundings, whilst making a positive and purposeful contribution to the local area.”

The scheme is being designed by M&O Architects.
