Listed castle transformed into luxury apartments

A Grade II listed castle which was once a school and also stored food during World War Two has been given a new lease of life following a “painstaking and loving” restoration.
Riber Castle, which overlooks the town of Matlock in the heart of the Derbyshire Dales, was an architectural masterpiece originally constructed as the private residence of the esteemed industrialist and philanthropist John Smedley in 1862. Following its restoration, it is now home to 26 luxury apartments.
Lying unoccupied since it closed as a boarding school in 1930, Riber Castle was used as an emergency food store during the Second World War, and a zoo operated within the grounds up until its closure at the turn of the millennium.
In 2000, with the ruins of Riber Castle comprising just four outer walls and no roof, The Wright Family fulfilled a dream by acquiring the property, embarking on a mission to restore it to its former glory. Skilled craftsmen and historians have worked tirelessly to preserve the castle’s original features whilst integrating modern amenities to ensure comfort and convenience to future residents.
As part of the extensive renovation each stone has been meticulously placed and period details have been restored to reflect the castle’s historic significance.
In addition to every apartment being finished to a high specification, including underfloor heating, high-speed internet access and advanced security systems, residents will have exclusive access to a wellness spa, state-of-the-art gym, listed courtyard garden and a 200 sq m orangery – a large multi-use space with a bar. Accommodation space also ranges from 1034 sq ft to 1946 sq ft.
Jamie Adam, director and head of residential development sales in the north at Savills, said: “Without question, this is one of the rarest developments I have been instructed on during my career. Not only does it have the most outstanding views in the heart of the Derbyshire Dales, but Riber Castle also combines historic grandeur with modern luxury and that is testament to the vision of the Wright family and the painstaking and loving restoration they have achieved.
“Owning Riber Castle is not just about acquiring a home; it is about becoming a custodian of history whilst having the privilege of being surrounded by the beauty and tranquility of nature. In terms of accommodation space, the level of square footage available is rare in the regional market. Whether you are seeking a luxurious family residence or a peaceful retreat, Riber Castle offers endless possibilities.”
