Work begins on wheeled sports facility in Derbyshire town

Work has begun on a new wheeled sports facility in Heanor, Derbyshire, designed by ex-pro skateboarder Marc Churchill.

Construction of the £200,000 project starts on Monday, October 14, 2024, funded by the UK Shared Prosperity Fund.

The facility is being built on Lockton Avenue by Gravity Engineering, a company that has created over 300 skateparks in the UK.

A wheeled sports facility is a place where people can participate in wheeled sports, such as skateboarding, BMX, inline skating and scootering.

It will be the first wheeled sports facility in Heanor and the first concrete one in Amber Valley.

Councillor John McCabe, cabinet member for communities and street pride portfolio, said: “We are excited to be able to bring to fruition this long-awaited facility. We anticipate it will bring people together and help establish better community cohesion and youth engagement.

“The benefits of such a resource are shown to have great health benefits all round. The £2.9m of UKSPF funding allocated to Amber Valley Borough Council has provided a fantastic opportunity to help address and deliver the needs of our local communities.

“A wheeled sports facility in Heanor has been talked about for a number of years so it’s great that we’ll soon see this finally come to fruition. As this is the first concrete wheeled sports facility in the borough, we anticipate it will create a hub for a wide range of users who will be excited to use the new facility.”
