Cineworld to shut Nottingham city centre venue

Cinema operator Cineworld is set to close its Cornerhouse venue in Nottingham.
The move has been revealed just a month after Cineworld unveiled plans to shut more of its Midlands locations as part of its ongoing restructuring programme.
In December, the cinema company said it would close six more cinemas, bringing the total number of sites shut down to 11.
The closures will included branches in Northampton, Castleford, Leigh, Middlesbrough, Poole and Weymouth, with the Weymouth location closing on 30 December and the others on 19 January.
Earlier last year, the cinema chain shut sites in Loughborough, Yate, Swindon Regent Circus and Glasgow Parkhead as part of the same restructuring efforts.
While Cineworld had planned to close its Hinckley branch as well, the firm said in December that the site has been spared following the approval of a new property deal.
However, negotiations over its Nottingham city centre site have collapsed.
In a statement to customers, Cineworld said: “After years of providing movie lovers with a place to feel more, we regret to inform you that, following the landlord’s decision to reject our proposals, we will be closing Cineworld Nottingham on February 2.
“We would like to take this opportunity to thank you for choosing Cineworld Nottingham over the years.”
The company’s restructuring plan, which involved significant rent cuts for many of its locations, was approved in court last year despite opposition from some landlords.
As part of its recovery strategy, Cineworld secured additional funding, including £40m in liquidity, and said it planned to invest around £35m into refurbishing its remaining cinemas.
Cineworld regular, Bev Cook, told us: “I was really surprised to get this email as Nottingham was not on the list of closures. It’s a real shame as I’ve been an unlimited member since January 2006. My wife and I had our first dates there so we feel very sad, plus this closure will be really bad for the Cornerhouse as a venue, but also for Nottingham. The shopping is dire and now not visiting to go to the cinema there is even less reason to visit the city centre now.”
