Published this weekend, the 17th annual Sunday Times BDO Profit Track 100 league table will see the East Midlands represented by six companies – up from just one in 2015.

The table ranks Britain’s private companies with the fastest-growing profits over three years.

The six companies headquartered in the East Midlands include three new entrants to the league table. Together they employ 2,100 staff and have achieved combined profits of £46m.

The East Midlands companies ranked are Motorpoint (16th), Van Elle (19th), Esensdex (41st), LION Trackhire (44th), Butcher’s Pet Care (66th) and Martin Group (71st).

Derby-based Motorpointopened its ninth site in 2015, and profits grew by an average of 104% a year to £12m, on sales of £563m. The company is reported to be considering a stock market listing this year.

Among the new entrants is Nottingham-based Esendex. More than 12,000 organisations, including Ocado and Specsavers, use its business messaging services to communicate with staff and customers. Strong demand in Europe and Australia helped profits grow by an average of 81% a year to £3m in 2015.

The companies in the East Midlands appear with businesses from around the UK, including domestic appliance manufacturer Gtech, craft beer maker BrewDog, sushi bar chain Wasabi and toy retailer The Entertainer. More than a quarter of the companies (29) are involved in construction and housebuilding, up from 15 in the previous year. They include Van Elle and Churchill Retirement Living.

The league table and awards programme is sponsored by BDO and UBS Wealth Management, and is compiled by Fast Track, the Oxford-based research and networking events firm.

Gareth Singleton, partner and head of the East Midlands at BDO, the title sponsor of the league table, said: “Medium-sized businesses across the UK are thriving, creating one in four jobs and responsible for one third of the country’s total revenue.

“They are seizing the opportunities a recovering economy presents and the most profitable have remained focused on sustainable growth through investment in innovation, diversification and overseas expansion.”
