Cash is king: Top 100 East Mids companies revealed

Today, TheBusinessDesk.com can reveal the 100 companies in the East Midlands with the biggest turnover.

The traditional big players remain in control of the East Midlands economy, with Boots, which pocketed £6.34bn last year, taking top spot from Travis Perkins, which has been on the acquisition trail over the last 18 months.

Food wholesale giant Booker Group, car retail outlet Pendragon and clothing and homeware brand Next make up the top 5.

Phil Sayers, partner at the Leicester office of Grant Thornton – which supplied TheBusinessDesk.com with the data, said: “There are very few surprises in the Top 100.

“Some businesses will go on the acquisition trail to grow. To try and build a business through organic turnover and profit can take a long time.

“However, some businesses are very nervous about acquistions, and look to the positives of having money in the bank.

“At the end of the day cash is king.”

Looking to the future, Sayers said: “It’s virtually impossible to say who the superstars of the future are. If you said ten years ago that Nokia would be virtually non-existent in 2016 not many people would believe you.

“So, although the East Midlands Top 100 has a familiar look about it, things can change incredibly quickly.”
