Derby rail firms sign £100m deal
Derby-based Bombardier has received an order worth an estimated £100m from Pride Park-based Porterbrook Leasing.
Porterbrook is buying 92 Class 387 Electrostar vehicles from Bombardier which are in addition to a previous order placed for a similar value back in October last year.
In a statement, the company said: “With this investment, Porterbrook demonstrates its support to the aspirations of the rail industry and the Department for Transport to alleviate the capacity pinch points in the network and provide Britain with a sustainable, world-class transport system. This latest acquisition reaffirms Porterbrook’s investment strategy in commuter multiple units and its longterm confidence in Bombardier’s Electrostar platform.”
With the latest order, it means that Great Western will receive 148 new carriages. In addition to this, 32 carriages are already being built by Bombardier, bringing the total number destined for the train operator to 180.
The order comes on the back of Bombardier opening its £12.5m testing and commissioning facility, called V Shop, which will initially be used to test trains destined for Crossrail, in London, which has been renamed the Elizabeth Line.
