New Nottingham venue moves a step closer

Plans for a new live music venue in Nottingham’s Creative Quarter have been given the green light by Nottingham City Council in a move that will create 20 jobs.

The Hub@The Corner, on the corner of Stoney Street and Warser Gate, will hold up to 150 people and will host stand-up comedy, literary and spoken word events, live music, live art and small scale performance theatre.

During the day it will serve as a mid-size conference space for meetings, workshops, rehearsals and presentations and as a co-working space and hub for creative professionals within the Creative Quarter.

TheHub@The Corner will also provide the opportunity for trainee chefs and graduates, part-time kitchen employees to practice and develop their cuisine skills.

The new venue has been used by Robert Howie-Smith who runs the Howie Smith Project – a social enterprise which takes derelict spaces and redevelops them for the artistic community to use.

Since 2012, the building has been called The Corner and has provided office and retail space for local creative companies.

A planning statement reads: “Working with the creative groups based in the building and in the area, the space would serve as a creative hub for creative professionals working in the Creative Quarter, providing access to digital facilities, fibre connectivity, networking opportunities, combined creative enterprise and business development.”

Howie-Smith has been quoted as saying: “The target with every building I take on is to make it a hub for creative talent, and promote the education of the arts.”

The Project has brought forward venues such as City Arts, The Nottingham Writers Studio and Oriel Chambers Courtyard in Nottingham as well as Sixty-Eight Humberstone Gate in Leicester.
