FTSE tipped to open modestly lower on a quiet day for news

PRE-OPEN REPORT: Headline shares are tipped to open 20 to 25 points lower today, according to financial websites, with little in the way of corporate news to provide direction, a Q3 update from BAT a likely focus.

In the US last night, the Dow rose five points at 11,169, the Nasdaq Composite added six points at 2,497 and the S&P500 was flat at 1,186.

In Asia today, the Nikkei was last off 27 points at 9,350, while the Hang Seng ended the morning down 377 points at 23,224.

Crude oil traded at £52.02 ($82.35) a barrel on Nymex and gold settled at £843 ($1,335) an ounce.

In the corporate diary for the day, interim results are due from Coca-Cola Hellenic Bottling Company, CSR, Electrolux, First Derivatives, Norsk Hydro, Telekomunikacja Polska and Virgin Media.

Trading statements are expected from British American Tobacco and Carpetright.
Aberdeen Development Capital, Eclectic Investment Company and Hardy Oil & Gas host their AGMs.
