Green light for manufacturing park set to create hundreds of jobs

Harworth Group has secured planning for major manufacturing site at the former Kellingley Colliery which it says could generate several hundred jobs.

The brownfield regeneration specialist has secured a resolution to grant planning permission at the 151-acre site in North Yorkshire, formerly home to the deep coal mine.

It said the development once completed would provide up to 1.45 million sq ft of manufacturing and distribution space.

Harworth took control of the site in March 2016, following the closure of the colliery in December 2015, at the cost of 700 jobs.

The Company has spent the last twelve months undertaking site safety and security works, including demolishing redundant industrial structures, whilst masterplanning the site for future employment uses.

Owen Michaelson, chief executive of Harworth, said: “We are delighted to have secured a resolution to grant planning permission for this major redevelopment, which will bring jobs and investment to the region.

“It is further evidence of the ability of our Capital Growth team to regenerate former industrial sites into sustainable developments for the benefits of local communities and underpins our strategy to drive long term value for shareholders.”

Planning consultancy Barton Willmore helped secure the planning from Selby district council. Claire Kent, planning director at Barton Willmore, said: “This is a major milestone for the regeneration of Kellingley Colliery, and the surrounding area.

“This will return jobs and investment to the area following the closure of the mine in 2015.

“As a commercial centre that is particularly well connected via the M62 motorway and rail connections, Kellingley has the potential to revitalise the regional economy.”
