Green light for Bullring’s restaurant expansion

A NEW 20,000 sq ft expansion to the Bullring shopping centre has been approved by Birmingham City Council planning chiefs.

Work on the Spiceal Street project is expected to start in the next few weeks and will be completed by the end of the year.

It will see the building of three units, totalling 11,500 sq ft, to accommodate new restaurants and the extension of two existing units along with improvements to pedestrian links, a water feature and other work in the St Martin’s Square area outside the centre.

The new, seven-strong dedicated restaurant hub will feature Nando’s, Pizza Hut, Wagamama, Jamie Oliver’s Italian and the trio of new eateries.

The project is based around the original Spiceal Street which was the home of the market and hospitality trade in Birmingham during the 1700s.

It has been designed by London-based architect Chapman Taylor.

Bullring general manager Tim Walley said: “We are thrilled to have been granted approval for the Spiceal Street development and look forward to offering our shoppers a new dining experience and evening destination in the heart of the city centre.”

• A reserved matters planning application has been submitted to Stoke-on-Trent City Council for a new £15m bus station. With outline planning permission already in place, remedial work is expected to start on the new station before the end of March if permission is granted. The station is the first phase of the £350m East West shopping centre regeneration. A shortlist of six contractors was also recently revealed.
