Former building society to be turned into bookies

A former Nationwide Building Society in Nottingham is set to be turned into a bookmakers.

Nottingham City Council has given Paddy Power the go-ahead to turn the ground floor unit at 13 Wheeler Gate, which has been vacant since 2014, into a betting shop.

Paddy Power want to split the former Nationwide unit in two and offer up the second for use as a retail unit.

A planning statement submitted by Planning Potential says: “The proposals will bring back into use a long standing vacant unit which in its current form detracts from the wider street scene and the aesthetic quality of the Grade II Listed Building.

“The sub-division of 13 Wheeler Gate in to two smaller units will introduce a new town centre use into the parade which is not currently on offer whilst making the remaining ground floor unit a more attractive investment opportunity to both national and independent retailers.”
