On the move: the latest East Midlands hires

Rob Mitchell and Cllr Jonathan Morgan

Charnwood Borough Council has appointed a new chief executive.

Rob Mitchell, who was formerly chief executive officer at Ashfield District Council in Nottinghamshire, has taken over from Geoff Parker who retired recently.

Cllr Jonathan Morgan, leader of the Council, said: “I am delighted to welcome Rob to Charnwood and look forward to what I am sure is an exciting future.

“Rob brings a wealth of experience and plenty of ideas to help make this Council even stronger in the future so we can better serve our residents and communities.

“I must place on record my thanks to Geoff and we wish him a very happy retirement. Geoff has been a fantastic servant to local government and he has played a key role in making Charnwood the strong and stable organisation it is today.”

Mitchell has also worked as a director at Tamworth Borough Council.

He said: “I am delighted to be at Charnwood and look forward to working with staff and members to deliver outstanding services to our communities.

“I am also looking forward to working with the Council’s partners as collaboration is key to successful service delivery.”

Elsewhere, an organisation that encourages businesses in South Kesteven to recruit apprentices has taken on an apprentice of its own.

Helen Ward has joined InvestSK as an apprentice office assistant. She will support the economic development company at its office in Grantham while studying for an NVQ Level 3 in Business Administration at Grantham College.

Steve Bowyer, chief executive at InvestSK, said: “We’re delighted to welcome Helen to the team. She’s really grasped the opportunity with both hands and I’m pleased to say we’re already seeing the benefits of recruiting an apprentice – the new skill set that Helen brings is really valuable.

“We’re practising what we preach. Part of our remit is to help businesses grow by promoting apprenticeships in South Kesteven, and what better way to do that than by taking on an apprentice of our own? Apprenticeships can be a great way for a business to grow their own talent in a way that makes commercial sense.”

Ward added: “I’m still learning the ropes but so far I’ve been involved in raising purchase orders and processing invoices, arranging meetings and providing administration support to the wider team.

“After I left school I had the option of going to university, but it wasn’t the route I wanted to take. I preferred to get straight into work, continue my training and actually earn some money!”
