Plans revealed for £100m landmark Nottingham city centre development

Plans have been unveiled for Nottingham city centre which would see a new £100m landmark development featuring a 170-bed hotel, hundreds of new homes and student housing.
Developer MRP has put forward a proposal for a 1.5-acre site in the Canal Quarter, at the junction of London Road and Queen’s Road, next to the railway station, to include:
-an 8-storey hotel fronting onto Queen’s Road, with approximately 170 bedrooms;
-a 12-storey student accommodation building on the north of the site, providing 392 student bed spaces; and
-a 22-storey apartment development in the north-east corner providing 166 privately rented homes
National planning and development consultancy Lichfields has been appointed by the developer to deliver the planning consent.
The parties are holding a public consultation on the proposals which will seek to regenerate this corner of the city.
Lichfields planning director Ian Kettlewell said: “This development displays investor confidence in Nottingham and plays a key part in the regeneration of the Canal Quarter.
“The creation of this landmark development will showcase Nottingham as an ambitious and forward-thinking city with aspirations for growth and redevelopment reflected in high-quality, ambitious architecture.”
MRP have appointed Belfast-based Consarc Design Group as project architects with the aim of redeveloping the site to “create a new vibrant mixed-use quarter with a unique character”.
The land was the historic site of a wagon works, as well as iron, steel and lace manufacturers and is currently occupied by four commercial warehouses.
The development proposes three separate buildings arranged around a central public courtyard with direct pedestrian access from Queen’s Road and London Road.
Graham Mitchell, Development Director at MRP, said: “We are looking to establish a new landmark, gateway approach to Nottingham from the south of the city.
“This site provides a unique opportunity to complement the existing community with a liveable, walkable and sociable new development.”
“The design of the new buildings will respect and complement the surrounding historic environment, including the Hicking Building and the Grade II* listed Midland Railway Station.”
The public consultation event will be held at 38 Carrington Street, Nottingham, Wednesday 13th November from 3pm to 7pm.
