Supermarket giant to create 750 jobs at new distribution centre

Plans for an enormous Aldi distribution centre which will reportedly create 750 jobs have been put before Hinckley and Bosworth Borough Council.

The proposed scheme at Nailstone colliery in Bardon, Leicestershire covers a total of 72 acres.

Plans for the supermarket giant’s new national distribution centre (NDC) include 4,600 sq m of ancillary office accommodation, HGV bays, a vehicle maintenance unit, a mezzanine area, cycle shelters, sprinkler tanks, a single-storey gatehouse structure and some 600 car parking spaces.

According to a design statement submitted by STOAS Architects, the site will become “the fulcrum of Aldi’s logistics infrastructure.”

The statement continues: “The NDC is designed to complement Aldi’s current Regional Distribution Centre network by receiving multiple full loads of product from suppliers, which allows the consolidation of stock. A large quantity of stock in one centre is more efficient than small quantities in a large number of centres. This process allows volume to drive efficiency and reduce overall stock deliveries, decreasing road miles and therefore Aldi’s carbon footprint.”

Nailstone colliery was a working mining site between c. 1866 to 1967 before it was converted into a coal output point for Bagworth, Ellistown and South Leicester collieries. It closed down in 1991.
