Plans revealed for two more major student accommodation schemes in city centre

How the Ilkeston Road scheme will look as hundreds more student beds set to come to Nottingham

Plans have been revealed for two more major student accommodation schemes in Nottingham city centre.

The first set of plans, on land between Union Road and St Marks Street and submitted by Environment Design Consultants, include 249 one-bedroom flats on the site of a former industrial building. The company has also built a five-storey block of student flats on the corner of Curzon Street. The new plans are the second phase of this initial scheme.

The new scheme will also include two commercial units on the ground floor.

A statement accompanying the plans reads: “The proposal will fulfill an economic role by bringing forward the development of a vacant brownfield site and by providing employment during the construction phase.

“It will fulfill an economic and social role by providing accommodation for students who will then make use of local facilities including local shops, public houses, restaurants and hot food takeaways, and leisure facilities.

“It will fulfill an environmental role by improving the appearance of a poor quality site through the erection of a well-designed buildings which will enhance the appearance of the street scene.”

Meanwhile, plans have also been revealed for 32 cluster flats on the site of a former filling station.

Hoperise has submitted the plans for the former service station site site at 266 Ilkeston Road.

The flats will be a mixture of 2-,3-,4- 5- and 6-bed apartments in a building which would include a central courtyard in a scheme designed by Swish Architecture.

A planning statement reads: “The application seeks to develop an existing brownfield site, which is currently inefficiently used and is located within a highly sustainable urban location. The size and nature of the proposed units helps to meet a growing need for purpose built student accommodation in the area.”
