Student flats plan for historic former school site

How the scheme would look

A former school and community centre site in Nottingham could be turned into a new 158-bed student accommodation scheme, according to new plans.

Ilkeston Nottingham Limited wants to turn the former Radford School, which was built in the late 19th Century, into a new purpose-built scheme by redeveloping existing buildings on the site and adding others.

The site lies on the edge of the city centre, on the junction of Ilkeston Road and Lenton Boulevard.

The proposed scheme has been drawn up by Leonard Design and includes a mixture of studios and cluster flats, with shared recreation facilities, amenity space and cycle
parking.

A planning statement reads: “At present the site is unused and does not make a meaningful contribution to the local economy and the local area. Its regeneration and development as student accommodation will provide a viable long term use for the site and vibrancy to the locality. There will also be temporary construction jobs created over the construction period.

“There is an ongoing and urgent need to meet the housing needs of students residing in the city and the proposed development will make a meaningful contribution to meeting that need.

“The original school buildings are retained and their heritage value enhanced and secured by sensitive restoration and conversion as part of the scheme.”
