Council u-turn sees developer get green light for new apartments
A developer’s proposals to turn empty space above shops into apartments have been given the green light.
Chesterfield Borough Council has approved plans from Nottingham-based ALB Group to create 36 new homes in the vacant first and second floors of Burlington House, on Burlington Street, Chesterfield.
It comes exactly a year after the local authority had originally turned down the plans, which ALB have now revised, including reducing the number of apartments from 40 to 36.
Following the u-turn, Arran Bailey, managing director of ALB Group said “the best result has been achieved for all.”
Bailey added: “We are over the moon to have achieved planning consent.
“It has been a long drawn out process and we are happy that the best result has been achieved for all.”
Tenant retailers occupying the ground floor, including Rebel Menswear, H Samuel, BetFred, Bird’s Bakery and Max Speilman, will continue to operate as that part of the building will be retained for commercial use.
The scheme is expected to take 50 weeks to complete.
Property consultants FHP acted on behalf of the previous owners and sold the 37,000 sq ft building to ALB Group. The company has looked after lettings in the building over the past five years.
ALB Group’s previous commercial-to-accommodation conversions include the former Ilkeston Co-op, Victoria Mill in Draycott, Prosperity House in Derby and the former Carlton Police Station in Nottingham.
