One of East Midlands’ oldest family businesses heads towards uncertain future

The future of one of the oldest family-owned companies in the East Midlands is in doubt.

Norman & Underwood, the glazing, metal roofing and cladding and building conservation specialist, was founded in Leicester in 1825 – and still trades from the city.

However, the company has now filed a notice of intetion to appointment administrators through law firm Freeths, according to documents seen by TheBusinessDesk.com.

The firm has worked on some of the UK’s best-known buildings, including Westminster Abbey, St Paul’s Cathedral, Hampton Court Palace and Chatsworth House. It has also worked abroad on major projects including the British Embassy in Moscow and the Dome of the Rock in Jordan.

According to its latest available accounts, made up to the end of 2021, Norman & Underwood, had debtors totalling almost £5m, while its creditors were owed £2.6m. The firm made a profit of almost £2.9m that year – almost the same as in 2020.

The firm at the time employed 33 staff at its headquarters on Scudamore Road.

The director of the firm is working with Begbies Traynor to try to secure a sale of the business and assets of Norman and Underwood. Any expressions of interest should be addressed to Richard Temple at Eddisons richard.temple@eddisons.com
