New plans for historic hospital site in the Peak District

Shire Hill Hospital

New proposals have emerged for a multimillion-pound project at the former Shire Hill hospital site, situated on the edge of the Peak District.

Cube Homes, the developer behind this venture aims to construct 41 family homes on this historic property.

Shire Hill Hospital ceased its operations in 2018, with healthcare services subsequently relocating to Tameside General.

In January 2022, the first proposal for a housing development was rejected by council members, with more than 100 residents from the local community voiced their apprehensions by writing to the council in response to the earlier plans.

The new plans will feature a mix of one, three, and four-bedroom homes on the historic site, including the former Glossop Workhouse building.

This development is also projected to generate £72,000 in S106 contributions for the benefit of the local area, directing funds towards enhancing amenities like playgrounds, green spaces, outdoor sports facilities and educational resources.

If the plans are approved, construction is set to begin in early summer 2024, and the first homes should be ready to move into by Christmas 2025.

Previous proposals have been controversial in the local community because of concerns about the hospital’s historical importance.
