Plans revealed for student scheme on busy city gateway

How Finley House would look

Plans for new a new student accommodation scheme on one of Nottingham’s busiest junctions have been revealed.

James Egan has submitted plans for a purpose built student accommodation scheme on the corner of Pemberton Street and Lower Canal Street – on land that has been used as a car park for almost 20 years – and on the edge of the Lace Market.

The plans outline a building – called Finley House – incorporating 90 student bedrooms, made up of 19 studios and 71 cluster flats and designed by Arc Design Studio.

A planning statement reads: “A new scheme which is of high quality will be attractive to prospective students, but also beneficial for the health and well-being of its occupants.

“The location is perfectly positioned for student housing due to its close proximity to Nottingham Trent University and the new University of Nottingham campus on the former HMRC site. It will also help to revitalise the local area by drawing interest further down Canal Street, and into the city centre.”

The proposed scheme would sit next to the Hylyfe building.

The three- and five-storey development facing Canal Street would fall back to four floors as it continued around onto Pemberton Street.

Nottingham City Council’s planning bosses will assess the scheme over coming weeks.
