Investor unveils multimillion-pound plans for golf and hotel complex

Horsley Lodge

Charjen Capital has been revealed as the purchaser of the 200-acre Horsley Lodge Golf Club in Derbyshire, acquiring the 19th-century site for an undisclosed sum.

The site is now set for a multimillion-pound transformation, led by Derbyshire entrepreneur Marc Brough.

TheBusinessDesk.com exclusively revealed the deal back in February.

In the first three months post-purchase, Charjen has invested £500,000 in upgrades to the golf course, members’ areas and hotel accommodations, including refurbishing 14 rooms and creating two new ones.

Plans include applying for planning permission to demolish existing conservatories in the main members’ building to make way for new restaurants and terraces.

Richard and Malcolm Salt, who created the 18-hole course and restored the range of character buildings that now comprise the clubhouse, and a wedding and hospitality venue, made the decision to sell in September last year.

Charjen has submitted an application to Amber Valley Borough Council, outlining plans designed by Sigma Architects.

The plans include an 85-cover high-end brasserie, a fine dining area with 18 covers, a chef’s table for eight and private dining space for 22.

Marc Brough of Charjen said: “We saw an opportunity to own one of Derbyshire’s finest golf courses in a stunning location and have grand plans to enhance the golf course itself, as well as upgrade the hotel and venue space sensitively and sustainably.

“We have a three-year strategy to make the most of this vast, stunning destination, creating a larger wedding venue, enhanced facilities for golfers – including a new driving range with simulators – more rooms for guests to stay and, of course, an elevated dining experience for all, supporting local producers.”
