Derby’s cultural scene gets £20m boost from Government funding
Derby’s cultural scene is set to benefit from £20m in government funding for two major projects.
The funding will support the restoration of the historic Guildhall Theatre and the redevelopment of Derby Theatre.
Derby City Council, the University of Derby and Derby Theatre will work together to develop plans for both venues.
£10m of the funding will be used to restore the Grade II-listed Guildhall Theatre.
Additional funding will come from the Council’s capital budget and options for match funding are being considered.
The other half of the funding will be used for a new accessible studio theatre next to the current Derby Theatre building.
The development of a new learning and research hub will further develop undergraduate and postgraduate theatre studies and will provide more space for Derby Theatre’s expanding community program.
Professor Kathryn Mitchell CBE DL, vice-chancellor of the University of Derby, said: “We are delighted that plans to develop Derby Theatre are progressing forward. The Theatre plays a vital role in the creative and cultural ecology of our city and is a key part of our university. As a professional, producing and learning theatre, it provides our students with a unique and valuable opportunity to study alongside professionals.
We are fully committed to supporting Derby Theatre and the regeneration of our city and look forward to continuing to work with partners on this project.”
