Plans in for major mixed-use scheme above Nottingham cave complex

How the scheme would look

Plans for a new mixed-use scheme that will include the city’s famous cave complex have been revealed.

Tarry Developments has lodged plans for 64 student flats along with 29 short-stay apartments, along with commercial space on the ground floor that will incorporate the caves below 101 Derby Road.

The scheme, on the site of the former Dancing Dragon Chinese restaurant and Ropewalk pub, is being designed by Arc Design Studio. The restaurant includes an entrance into the cave complex; Tarry Developments wants to open this as a bar/restaurant.

A planning statement reads: “The proposed residential scheme is specifically designed for student living within the city, offering a comprehensive approach that enhances local amenities by making efficient and practical use of the existing site.

“The primary goal of this project is to accelerate the implementation of the local plan, activating Canning Circus as a vibrant hub of activity. By increasing foot traffic and encouraging on-site engagement, the development aims to extend the commercial corridor
from the city centre, integrating this area more fully into the broader urban economy.
