Now showing: new operator set to move in to Nottingham cinema site

The Cornerhouse

A new occupier has already been lined up for the Cineworld site in Nottingham city centre.

News broke on Monday evening (January 13) about Cineworld shuttering its site in The Cornerhouse in Nottingham as part of its restructuring plans. The cinema operator said: “After years of providing movie lovers with a place to feel more, we regret to inform you that, following the landlord’s decision to reject our proposals, we will be closing Cineworld Nottingham on February 2.

However, TheBusinessDesk.com understands that Nottingham-based agent Box Property already has a new tenant – Vue – lined up for the substantial site.

Box Property, which is run by Ben Tebbutt and Frankie Labbate and specialises in the hospitality and leisure sector, has told us that there is “big news incoming” for the Cineworld site. Now, cinema operator Vue has been lined up for The Cornerhouse, who will refurbish the space and open a “state-of-the-art” venue.

Vue’s other East Midlands venues are in Ashbourne, Leicester and Northampton.

A Vue spokesperson said: “We can confirm that we will be coming to The Cornerhouse, Nottingham.  We’re very much looking forward to bringing guests the ultimate big screen experience later this year and will share more information in due course.”

Box Property was appointed as joint leasing agent on the city’s 200,000 sq ft multi-let leisure scheme, The Cornerhouse, in 2019.

In December, Cineworld unveiled plans to shut more of its Midlands locations as part of its ongoing restructuring programme.

The cinema company said it would close six more cinemas, bringing the total number of sites shut down to 11.

The closures will included branches in Northampton, Castleford, Leigh, Middlesbrough, Poole and Weymouth, with the Weymouth location closing on 30 December and the others on 19 January.

Earlier last year, the cinema chain shut sites in Loughborough, Yate, Swindon Regent Circus and Glasgow Parkhead as part of the same restructuring efforts.

While Cineworld had planned to close its Hinckley branch as well, the firm said in December that the site has been spared following the approval of a new property deal.
