Timeline to begin Derby’s Masterplan

A new Derby city centre public realm scheme is to be installed this month.

The creative timeline installation, celebrates important moments in the Derby story.

The Spot is currently undergoing a major upgrade and refresh, transforming it into a location for street theatre, live music and traders. The ring sculpture is currently being manufactured locally and is to be installed on Wednesday 24th August with an official opening for The Spot on Friday 14th October.

Bob Betts, managing director of Smith of Derby, said: “Smith of Derby were delighted to work with the City Council on this creative installation celebrating the many industries and important moments in time for city. It’s fitting as Smith of Derby prepare to celebrate our 160th year of manufacturing and creative time keeping in the city.”

Martin Rawson, deputy leader of Derby City Council, said: “We want to improve people’s experience of Derby which is why we will continue to invest in the public realm. This will create a high quality space at an important pedestrian junction, sharing the Derby story and hosting family entertainment.”

The Spot is the first of 20 projects to be delivered under the Derby City Centre Masterplan which is a private/public sector initiative to attract £3.5bn in investment, create 4,000 new jobs and nearly 2,000 new homes over the next 15 years.
