Petition launched to save popular city centre pub from redevelopment

The Ned Ludd

An online has petition has been launched aimed at trying to save a Nottingham city centre pub from being redeveloped in Nottingham.

As we exclusively revealed earlier this month, The Ned Ludd, which has been open for since 2013, could be turned into offices if plans by PKL Investments get the go-ahead.

According to documents seen by TheBusinessDesk.com, the Friar Lane pub could turned into office space to be used by two unnamed businesses in the healthcare sector to operate from the Friar Lane site.

Now, a petition by Bhavik Patel posted on Change.org by Bhavik Patel is trying to drum up support to defend the pub.

It says: “For many of us in Nottingham, this family-run pub is more than just a place to grab a pint. It’s our local hub, our community centre, and an integral part of our city’s unique charm. This pub has been in the same family for many years and has become a beloved institution in Nottingham city centre.

“This isn’t just about preserving a business; it’s about preserving our community spirit. The pub hosts popular quiz nights and warmly welcomes all pets, making it not only pet-friendly but also people-friendly! Its closure would mean losing one of the very few unique places left in Nottingham city centre.”

A planning statement submitted to Nottingham City Coucil with the planning application on behalf of PKL Investments reads: “A planning statement says: “The proposals represent a positive re-use of an existing building that would not be detrimental to the amenities or function of existing retail uses.

“It has been demonstrated that there be would no adverse impacts of any significance upon matters of importance in respect of impact on the primary shopping area that might
otherwise outweigh the significant benefits that would arise, in particular maintaining and enhancing the vitality and vibrancy of the city centre.

“For the reasons set out, the overall planning balance weighs in favour of the application and should be supported by the local planning authority and therefore we request that planning permission is granted without delay.”

So far, the petition has 430 signatories. Comments left include: “There is no need to close a thriving business when there are vacant premises all over the city centre. It makes no logical sense if the aim is to keep footfall and promote business in the centre of Nottingham.”

Another added: “One of the best pubs around! The owners have poured their heart and soul into place. It’s a great place to have a feed or check out their carefully thought out list of yummy beverages. Trivia nights are always a good time! This pub deserves to stay open. It will be a tragedy if it has to shut its doors because of money hungry developers.”
