Sports Direct considers offer for suspended football operator

Derbyshire-based retail giant Sports Direct is mulling over an offer to take full control of Goals Soccer Centres, which operates a number of small-sided football clubs throughout the UK.

Sports Direct is already the largest shareholder in the Scottish company, with a shareholding of 18.93 per cent, and is now considering the possibility of making a cash offer for the firm, whose shares are currently suspended from trading on AIM.

Goals Soccer Centres’ trading facility on AIM will be cancelled on 30 September 2019 if it fails to secure an extension to its suspension, but Sports Direct believes an extension might be possible if the East Kilbride-based firm’s board commits to achieving one.

Sports Direct believes that, despite the firm performing well and being cash generative, the Goals Soccer Centres board is not committed to maintaining its trading facility, and is considering making an offer it believes would be in the best interests of the Scottish company’s shareholders.
