This week’s Top 10 stories: Growth on the agenda

Kavita Oberoi

Expansion has been the order of the day this week, and just as bad news can prove popular, then so can more positive business stories.

Top of the pile this week was the news that Kavita Oberoi, the Derby-based entrepreneur is set to expand her busisness empire again to include the acquisition of Star 21, a Milton Keynes call-answering company.

Oberoi, who runs the Oberoi Business Hub on Pride Park, also says she is staffing up in Derby, plans to expand out from her serviced offices business offer outbound services and has declared that “serviced offices are the future”.

Our second most popular story was about East Midlands bakery Luke Evans which has invested £75,000 in new equipment which will allow it to produce up to 9,000 bread rolls per hour.

The new machine gives the Derbyshire family run bakery an extra 50% capacity for roll making and has been purchased in response to increased demand.

In third, less optimistic story; 500 jobs are under threat after a Grantham-based debt advice company revealed plans to restructure.

Totemic Holdings said that “significant changes” in its industry meant that advisory and admin roles could be axed.

The company employs a total of 876 workers at three sites with 597 at its head office in Grantham, 270 in Long Bennington, near Newark and nine in Birmingham. Here’s hoping the uncertainty surrounding these roles is quickly banished.
